as my red taxi races over the tsing ma suspension bridge toward the laser/light show that is hong kong, I gaze over gotham and realize I am no longer in kansas...
1st time in hong kong so I choose to stay at ground zero for the wan chai action, Wharney Guang Dong. rooms on the exec plus floor are newly renovated, clean and very small. I will, however, not be spending much time here watching local tv. quick clean up and I am out into the heat of the night. some of the pubs are slamming including the queen victoria. guys and girls spilling into the street. I get wafting smells of smoke, beer and promises.
pop my head into new makati, decide not to pay the $500 hk cover charge. bar 109 looks dead. walk by escape and ask the doorman what is going on inside. he honestly tells me to come back around midnight. I park myself at dusk till dawn for a quick beer to collect my thoughts. a handful of filipinas sitting around and the band is able to play any top 40 song the audience throws out at them. I decide I am too restless to get into a conversation here (especially having just got off the plane from bkk). I want to explore this glorious city. my feet find me walking east on lockhart road toward the fuji building.
i come to find that the areas I have read about (ie. wan chai, admiralty, etc) are actually small neighborhoods. one can walk around the city with ease and cross many of these. after a 10 min walk, I am in front of the fuji. the building facade is not as it appears in internet searches. a cool chrome lighted sign now sits above the entrance. I walk up the stairs towards the elevators and there is a japanese guy and indian guy standing there waiting for the lift. a sweating, husky korean walks in behind me mopping his brow and neck with a ratty hanBKerchief. he is furiously searching the internet on his phone. I catch a reflection of one of the 141 sites in his eyes. the doors to the small elevator open and we shuffle inside. I tap the 22 button with bravado. no one else reaches for the buttons of any other floor.
it is at this moment I revel in the monger code. none of us look at each other in the eye, each of us understanding we are here for the same reason. the door opens and the husky guy holds it for us all to exit. game on! I am perplexed as to which of the festively decorated doors I should knock at first. the japanese guy has a plan to knock on every single available door. we all move through the various floors in a respectful rhythm without intruding on each other's space. as the guy knocked on a door, one of more of us would peer inside or just continue on. some great talent when the doors opened but it also could be I was blinding by the neon and xmas lights that unmistakeably marked these floors as naughty. a wave of tiredness came over me around the 9th floor, a long day of tedious travel. I tried reading the signs on the doors but they were mostly in chinese. others simply stated in english the various talents that awaited those who entered.
methodically, this continued until the japanese guy and I made it back to the ground floor. not sure where we lost the other two guys. we looked at each other and he adamantly pressed the elevator button to go for another round of hunt. i, triumphantly, marched back toward my hotel with a stop for a quick snack and bottled water for my room. I will return to the fuji to make a choice. but not until tomorrow when I reserve one of the honey girls from the 141 site that I have had my eye on. stay tuned...

and as a last resort, you can always get some action at Escape, which is next to Wharney Guangdong, at the basement level. I've had lots of fun there.
