...BTW, why are you speaking for Singapore? Last time I checked, it was a secular nation, albeit an authoritative one with plenty of religious freedom for minorities...

Singapore walks a fine line maintaining a stable society consisting of several competing ethnic groups that deep down hate each other's guts. The history of the Straits is full of accounts of ethnic riots (Chu vs Hokkian, Han vs Chu, Malay vs Chinese, Indian vs Sikh, etc). In fact the whole public rationale for Malaysia to separate from Singapore was several days of bloody riots between Malays and the Chinese majority here.

Undermining the social stability is one of the offenses they take seriously here. Comments about Malaysian culture/government would certainly count. Recently a Singaporean was given prison time for posting a blog complaining that Mainland Chinese stink and should be forced to bathe more often.

As for your story it depends on which Malaysian paper you got that from. Was it pro or anti government? Was it one of the Ethnic Chinese produced papers or a mainline publication.

My information came from the Straits Times, the Asian Wall Street Journal, and the International Herald Tribune; none which would have an axe to grind against Malaysia.

One thing I have learned in my worldwide travels, verify everything you read and remember that most local newspapers are best used to line bird-cages or wrap fish. Stick to the international publications...

Malaysia scores OK with me. My very favorite Thai movie star, Ying Julaluk Krittiyarat (หญิง-จุฬาลักษณ์ ), has been living in Malaysia since the publication of her revealing book Sex was so frowned on here in Thailand by the usual den of hypocrites. She said it's more free there, whatever that means (?). I do hang on her every word obviously.

We are losing the thread here. I didn't ask for an exposition of the Singaporean society, which I already alluded to as an authoritative but secular society.

My question, rhetorical one at that, was as to why you are dragging in Singapore in your defense of Malaysian government/society.

> Indian vs. Sikh

Sikhs are Indians. BTW, that's like saying Chinese vs. Han.

Sailor, last posting from my side on this issue. Go wild.

Do not have to say anything more the quote above shows that you are either ignorant or a complete newbie.

The Chus still hate the Hans for what they did in 200 BC. A major Chinese city was locked down for 4 days last year because a riot that started between the Han and Chu community over (believe it or not) an fender bender.

And I would like to see how long you would last if you walked up to a Sikh and told him he was Indian. Just because the Sikh land is within the political borders of India does not make the people part of India.

Are you American? That would explain your attitude. Most Americans do not understand that many countries are made up of multiple competing ethnic groups that hate each other. Hence the mistakes they have been making in Iraq, Afghanistan, and previously the former Yugoslavia.

The Singaporians get it, so do the Malaysians. That is why they are so careful not to interfere in cultural/religious disputes.

I hate to say it (as I am American) the average American just does not get it.

But then again based on a series now showing on BBC, nor does the average Brit...

Tend to disagree there,, it is well documented that Malaysia is supporting the Islamic rebels in the South of Thailand that continue to kill and maim the Budhists of Thailand.Comments from the former PM of Malaysia toward Australia have bordered on insanity but ignored from Australia as just idiosy.
I have long seen the riches of Malaysia, sitting south of a peaceful yet ever increasingly angry Thailand and on the North of a peaceful but angered Australia, being a target for a quick decisive aquisition.
If Malasia keeps throwing its weight around above its capability it may well get smacked.

Report from The New Straits Times (Malaysia) dated Thursday 24 May 2007 :-

Penang one of 10 best places in Asia
===========================

PENANG has been voted as one of Asia’s top 10 places to live in by expatriates.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said Penang was placed 9th, one spot ahead of Kuala Lumpur, in an international survey of 254 places. This marks a climb of three spots from the same survey five years ago.

The yearly survey by Employment Conditions Abroad Ltd, a human resource consultant agency, is based on weather, air quality, infrastructure, health services, housing, security and politics.

Singapore placed 1st, followed by Kobe, with Tokyo and Osaka tied in 3rd spot. The other cities are Hong Kong (5th), Macau (6th), Taipei (7th) and Bangkok (8th).

Some expatriates from certain places, I guess. I met an Indian girl there who seemed to like it, and there are other communities of course as well. But after 3 visits 7yrs ago, I couldn't see myself living there very happily. Not in my personal top 10 as far as I know. Has it changed dramatically?

No, It has changed but I wouldn't use the word Dramatic! It is one of the better places in Malaysia, much like Kuching it is more Chinese than Malay & cleaner IMHO. Some great places to eat but like you SJ, it would make my top 10 list, maybe make top 30 places in Asia list! If you want fun KL is the better choice, quality of life in Penang I believe would be better!

Report from The New Straits Times (Malaysia) dated Wednesday 30 May 2007 :-

Federal Court dismisses Lina Joy’s appeal to drop “Islam” in IC
==============================================

PUTRAJAYA : Azlina Jailani, the woman who converted to Christianity, today failed in her appeal to get the Federal Court to compel the National Registration Department (NRD) to drop the word “Islam" from her identity card.

In a 2-1 majority decision, the court ruled that Azlina, 42, who changed her name to Lina Joy, should obtain a Syariah Court order confirming her apostasy before the department could delete the word.

Chief Justice Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim said the NRD had the right to require Lina Joy to produce an order from the Syariah Court to confirm that she had renounced the Islamic religion if she wanted to delete the word “Islam” in her identity card.

Justice Ahmad Fairuz and Federal Court Judge Datuk Alauddin Mohd Sheriff rejected the appeal while the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Richard Malanjum gave a dissenting judgment.

Lina had appealed to the Federal Court after the Court ot Appeal in a 2-1 majority decision on Sept 19, 2005, prevented her from deleting the word “Islam” from her identity card on the grounds that her renounciation of Islam had not been validated by the Syariah Court or any other lawful Islamic authorities.

She made the appeal to the Appeals Court after the High Court in April 2001 ruled that as a Muslim she could not renounce Islam and that the matter of renunciation must be decided by the Syariah Court.

Lina named the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council, the government of Malaysia and NRD director-general Datuk Wan Ibrahim Wan Ahmad as the respondents in her appeal.

On Feb 2, 1997, she applied to the NRD to change her name to Lina Joy on the grounds that she had converted to Christianity but it was rejected on Aug 11, 1997. Her second application to the NRD to change her name in Nov 1999, however, was approved but the new identity card issued listed her as a Muslim.
