Tourist and cabby assault each other over taxi fare
=======================================
KUALA LUMPUR - A tourist and a taxi driver assaulted each other physically at a busy street when the latter refused to use the meter and quoted the foreigner an exorbitant rate for a short distance's travel.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at about 11.15am near Jalan Alor, off Jalan Bukit Bintang, as the tourist, in his 40s, was looking to hail a taxi outside a hotel.
"He had asked about five taxis parked there earlier to drive him to a certain location," a witness, who declined to be identified, said.
"But all of them refused to use the meter and had asked him for a high fare. When he reached the sixth taxi, he must have been very angry," said the witness.
"When that taxi driver also refused to use the meter and asked for an exorbitant sum, he started shouting at the driver. The driver shouted back and this was when he got punched in the face."
Furious, the 51-year-old taxi driver got out, pulled out a piece of wood from his vehicle and hit the foreigner on his head.
This led to a full-blown brawl between the two as bystanders watched the violence.
The foreigner grabbed a rock and smashed the back windscreen and a side mirror of the taxi.
Shortly after that, DBKL enforcement officers and policemen arrived at the scene to break up the fight.
"Both men were left bloodied from the injuries they suffered on their bodies, head and hands," said the witness.
Police later took the tourist to the Tun H.S. Lee police station for questioning.
The taxi driver lodged a police report.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police would investigate the matter further.

One more held over rape of American teacher by KL cabbies

PETALING JAYA: Another suspect has been detained in connection with the robbery and rape of a 24-year-old American teacher.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the man, in his 20s, was picked up at a house in Balakong at about 8.30pm on Thursday.
He will be remanded until March 19 to help in investigations.
It was previously reported that a 47-year-old man had been detained in connection with the assault on the foreigner.
She had stopped a taxi near a shopping mall to return to her house in Damansara Perdana at about 6pm on Monday.
However, a few minutes into the journey the taxi driver stopped to pick up a man.
He then made another stop, this time on the excuse that the car had run out of petrol.
Shortly afterwards, a van came by and the teacher was told to get into the van which would take her home.
However, the victim was instead taken to a house where she was raped by one of the men.
The van driver helped the victim escape the next day.
She then boarded a bus to Sungai Pelek in Sepang and lodged a police report.

WEF: Singapore, Malaysia ahead of Thailand for tourists

When it comes to favourite destinations for tourists, Thailand is behind Singapore and Malaysia, according to a report of the World Economic Forum.
The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report for 2013 placed Singapore on top of the countries in Southeast Asia and put Malaysia one spot above the kingdom.
It praised the friendly attitude of Thais towards foreign tourists and the solid performance of the private sector in Thailand to bolster tourism. But the industry was hampered by natural disasters, political unrest, the protection of property rights and red tape to start a business, noted the report, which is conducted every two years.
Thailand projects 24.5 million tourists this year, up from 22.3 million in 2012. The Tourism Department hopes 30 million visitors will come to the country in 2015.
Thailand ranked 43rd in the world's rankings, dropping two notches from the last survey in 2011. It also was the ninth most popular country in the Asia-Pacific region also lead by Singapore.
"Singapore benefits from excellent transport infrastructure", including ground and airport facilities, the report said.
Malaysia came second in Southeast Asia and eighth in the Asia-Pacific due to its low fuel prices, ticket taxes and airport charges, in addition to its competitive hotel rates.
Malaysia has ridden on its successful "Truly Asia" tourism campaign to lure tourists to the country.
Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia were behind Thailand respectively. Laos and Myanmar were not included in the report.
Natural resources and several World Heritage sites were among attractions enticing tourists to Indonesia, it said.
The report called the Philippines "the most improved country" among the Asia-Pacific nations, thanks to its aggressive spending on marketing and branding campaigns.
Improving protection of property rights, more openness toward foreign investment and fewer visa requirements for foreign visitors made the Philippines an up-and-coming country, although infrastructure remained a problem, it added.
Switzerland was in command as the world's best destination since the last report due to its top hotel and other tourism facilities. "Switzerland's infrastructure, especially ground transport, is among the best in the world," it said.
Haiti was placed last among 140 countries surveyed in the report.

Malaysian cabbie gets 24 years jail for robbing and forcing woman to give him oral sex

KUALA LUMPUR: A taxi driver was jailed a total of 24 years and ordered to be whipped four times for robbing, molesting and forcing a woman passenger to perform oral sex on him two years ago.
Sessions Court judge Hasbi Hasan meted out the sentence after the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a case beyond reasonable doubt.
M. Saravanan, 30, was jailed 12 years and ordered to be whipped three times for forcing the 31-year-old woman to perform oral sex on him.
He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and ordered to receive a stroke of the rotan for molesting the woman by fondling her breasts.
Saravanan was also jailed seven years for robbing the woman of her blackberry handphone and about RM500 cash by using a parang.
Saravan's counsel mitigated that his client had only seven years of education, came from a poor family and his father was a mechanic.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Gin Han who appeared on behalf of DPP Ooi Chean Ling, said the victim was single and the incident had a psychological impact that would affect her married life in future.
Tan said Saravanan's passengers expected to be sent to their destination safely but had taken this chance to molest and rob the victim.
He said Saravanan's seven years of education not a good reason as it was sufficient to teach him not to commit the offences.
Judge Hasbi said she agreed with Tan as Saravanan was a cab driver and the offence would affect the country's image, especially the tourism industry.
