Kuala Lumpur ranked way down in Reader’s Digest latest appraisal
=================================================

PETALING JAYA: Some things do not seem to change in Malaysia and foremost among them are rudeness and inconsiderate behaviour.

Six years ago, Reader's Digest placed Malaysia's rudeness level at 33 out of the 35 countries ranked.

The latest appraisal by the magazine shows Kuala Lumpur almost at the bottom of a list of Least Courteous Cities at number 34 out of 36 major cities in the world.

Police records show that more than 20% of the 1.3 million accidents yearly result from aggressive driving behaviour but inconsiderate and risky conduct on the roads remain the main complaints, according to findings in The Star Online's Facebook page (www.facebook/thestaronline) survey.

Other selfish acts like ignoring signs against smoking, eating and littering, and rushing in to lifts, trains and buses before allowing people to exit are also high on the list.

Poor toilet etiquette, talking loudly on phones even in cinemas, being late for appointments, not saying “thank you” and leaving trolleys in parking lots are the other bad habits that Malaysians continue to practise shamelessly.

Academic counsellor Joshua Johnson, 31, said the most common examples of bad drivers were those who did not use indicator lights when switching lanes and tailgating road bullies.

Christopher Oh, 25, a research assistant, said he was peeved by smokers who disregarded no-smoking signs in enclosed areas.

Describing them as rude public hazards, he said: “Smoking in a non-smoking area is thoughtless and irresponsible because second-hand smoke is harmful, especially to non-smokers,” he said.

Kevin Mcintyre, a Scottish expatriate working in Kuala Lumpur, said he missed his stop on the train because people were rushing into it as he was trying to get out.

“It was rude and caused me a great inconvenience,” he said.

A Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad spokesman confirmed that such uncaring attitude was common, especially during rush hours.

“Passengers also do not readily offer their seats to pregnant, handicapped or elderly passengers,” he added.

He said that during off-peak periods, there were also male passengers who indiscriminately boarded coaches reserved for women, ate on board, smoked and also littered.

In GEORGE TOWN, Penang Senior Citizens Association president Lawrence Cheah noted that young Malaysians were not as polite as their Singaporean counterparts.

“In Singapore, they willingly give up their seats on public transport,” he said.

He said that despite the higher level of literacy, people seemed to have adopted a less caring attitude.

“In the old days, people were more civic-minded, although they were not as highly educated as today,” he added.

Eden Handicap Service Centre assistant unit head S.K. Lee said it was meaningless to be highly educated if one behaved rudely.

“Parking in lots for the disabled and using public toilets meant for such people is very bad and rude behaviour,” he said.

Shape up, Tourism Ministry urges cabbies
==============================

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism Ministry is urging taxi drivers to shape up and provide better services.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said taxi drivers were the front liners who met tourists daily and the quality of their service affected the country's image.

"They are dealing with 24.7 million international tourists and we are going to reach 36 million soon," she said during a press conference after launching the new Crabtree and Evelyn concept store at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Thursday.

She said the ministry has received 42 complaints from tourists on taxis in 2010 and 61 in 2011, which represented 25% of the overall complaints the ministry received.

She added it also received 20 complaints from tourists on taxis from January to August this year.

"The complaints were filed by tourists from places like Japan, the Middle East and Africa. The complaints were mostly on taxi drivers not using metres, overcharging, harassment and being rude.

"The ministry is concerned that Kuala Lumpur earned the top spot on LondonCabs.co.uk's list of cities with the worst taxi drivers in the world," she said.

She was commenting on the 100 taxi drivers who had gathered in Jalan Bukit Bintang from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday to voice their grievances, which included the introduction of the free GO-KL buses that they said affected their business.

LondonCabs.co.uk ranked Kuala Lumpur taxi drivers as the worst in the world. Another, Ratestogo.com, put KL as number three after Phnom Penh and Jakarta.

"We hope the taxi industry will change to become the best taxi drivers in the world and that we receive zero complaints about them," Dr Ng said.

KL cabbies live up to 'worst taxi drivers in the world' reputation
===============================================

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - It didn't take much a backpack slung over my shoulders, an empty camera bag around the neck, some baggy trousers and voila, I looked every bit the Mat Salleh tourist.

Thanks to my British-Malaysian Chinese parentage, I was assigned to go “undercover” to check out how a typical tourist would fare with our KL cabbies, who had earned the city the reputation of having the worst taxi drivers in the world, according to LondonCabs.co.uk.

Popular website Tripadvisor also warns travellers about KL's errant taxi drivers who “refuse to use the meter, quoting a fare often with the view of ripping you off”.

“This quoted' fare is generally akin to daylight robbery, and sometimes when haggling takes place, it is reciprocated with rude gestures or abusive language...” adds Tripadvisor.

On Virtualtourist.com, a visitor posted: “I have travelled the world and from Bombay to Boston I can tell you the taxi drivers in KL are the biggest pack of thieving lying dirtbags you will ever come across.”

Another responded: “Agreed! They are notorious and globally infamous for fleecing customers!”

I fully agree with the opinion about KL taxi drivers.
Apart from the fleecing that they do, their arrogance and contempt for the tourists particularly if you happen to be Asian is a real put off.
the place has great infrastructure and is really beautiful but will never be on my tourist map.

Expats commend Malaysians for their warmth and friendliness
==============================================

Expatriates commended Malaysians for their warmth and friendliness, in agreement with Malaysia's 10th ranking in Forbes' World's Friendliest Countries' list.

American Eric Miller, 30, was so bowled over by the friendliness of Malaysians that he ended up marrying a local woman.

"One of my most memorable encounters with Malaysians here was during my wedding. Everywhere I went, the people were extremely friendly."

Miller also praised Malaysia for its good weather and tasty food.

Malaysia was ranked 10th as it delivered a better quality of life, a satisfying social life, an ease in local travel and better housing.

Alex Greenland, 33, a teacher from England, said she already loved the lifestyle here even though she had only been here for two months.

Echoing her sentiments was her fellow countryman, Eddie Murphy, 49, who said Malaysians were down-to-earth and easy to communicate with.

"I have no issues in communicating with the locals as many of them are able to speak good English." Ellen Suppiah, 45, also from England, had no trouble integrating with the local community. She and her husband have been here for nine years.

"My husband and I have found many like-minded locals here and we mix a lot with them.

"Malaysians are very friendly and accommodating, especially with regard to bringing our children to restaurants."

She said most restaurants she frequented here provided high chairs for children, adding that Malaysians were more accepting of noisy children in eateries compared with people in her home country.

Talib Bahadidah, 30, a petroleum geologist, also loved living and working in Malaysia.

However, he did have difficulty adjusting to the food here which was either too spicy or too sweet for him.

Twin Towers top TripAdvisor list
========================

TRIPADVISOR, the world's largest travel site, yesterday revealed the highly rated attractions in Malaysia that travellers around the world were talking about the most last year.

In a statement, TripAdvisor said the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur topped the list.

"These towers are really stunning, especially at night when they are lit up.

"They are so big that it was hard to get them both in a single picture," said a TripAdvisor traveller.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), which came in at number two, has, as one TripAdvisor traveller said, anything and everything you need, from coffee places to shops, restaurants and bars.

At number three is the Langkawi Cable Car, Kedah.

"You can feast your eyes on the breathtaking greenery along the way and we had a beautiful view of the sunset, too," said a traveller.

TripAdvisor said the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, at number four, was described by a traveller as an add-on after visiting the National Orchid Garden.

"We spent three hours there watching the various birds soar through the huge canopy area.

"I would recommend this to anyone even marginally interested in birds," the traveller added.

TripAdvisor said the top 10 picks in Malaysia's most talked about attractions last year, from premier shopping malls to historical museums and tropical conservation parks, were ranked according to the number of reviews received on TripAdvisor.com based on global Internet protocol addresses between Jan 1 and Dec 31, last year.

TripAdvisor, which started in March 2011 in Malaysia, is the world's largest travel website and operates in 30 countries worldwide, including China.

It features 1,443 hotels, 1,235 bed and breakfast inns, 143 vacation rentals, 3,024 restaurants and 941 things-to-do, including a collaboration with Malaysia's leading organisations like Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Maxis and Tourism Malaysia.

And I would like to see how long you would last if you walked up to a Sikh and told him he was Indian. Just because the Sikh land is within the political borders of India does not make the people part of India.

Just stumbled across this post now. Although it's 6 years old, China Sailor, did you really post that ?

Another feather in KLIA’s hat
======================

PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is one of the world's most comfortable airports for people to sleep in.

A website known as “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” has picked KLIA as the fifth best airport in the world with travellers praising its cushioned seats, friendly staff and free WiFi.

“Airport sleepers like KLIA's long benches, reclining rest chairs and showers,” the website said, citing 18,190 poll responses collected last year covering dozens of airports.

Many reviewers appeared unwilling to pay for a hotel room or were simply waiting in transit.

“Staff were very friendly and no one bothered me. It's even better than a hotel as you only have to walk a few steps from your bed for a fresh teh tarik,” wrote a user only known as Gipsy.

Another traveller, known only as “pensations”, gave tips on how to survive at the main terminal.

“I slept on the long seats at the back of the fifth floor. Some are facing the glass wall and away from the counters, giving you some privacy,” he wrote.

There were also tips on using the airport's gyms, lounges and even a day spa in KLIA's vicinity.

Travellers were reminded to arm themselves with sleeping masks, pillows and blankets for maximum comfort.

One previous passenger, Claire Bong, 31, spoke of how she roamed about KLIA for 15 hours in 2005 while waiting for a transit flight from Perth, Australia to Ipoh.

“I had just graduated and didn't want to spend money on a hotel,” she said, adding that she had reached KLIA at around 10pm.

She found a secluded corner, held on to her luggage and brought out a book for company.

Bong also entertained herself with the free Internet kiosks and watched airplanes fly by.

“I was very lucky. No one disturbed me at all,” she said.

Other respondents in the survey advised people to stay away from the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal, telling them to take a 20km bus ride to KLIA if they wanted a good nap.

LCCT, the survey claimed, was a “boring nightmare”.
