China to be 3rd most popular destination

Bangkok - China, which attracted 49.6 million tourists last year, is expected to become the world's third most popular tourist destination by this year or 2008, the head of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) said Thursday.
"After having overtaken Italy as the fourth-ranking world destination in terms of arrivals in 2004, it (China) should move up to third place this year or in 2008 at the latest," said WTO secretary-general Francessco Frangialli.
France, Spain and the United States are currently the world's top three tourist destinations but China was neck-and-neck with the US last year, when 51.1 million tourists visited the States, and could surpass the world superpower this year, Frangialli told the "Asia Forum 2007: The Future of Aviation."
China will also become a major source of world travellers, the UNWTO chief predicted.
"By 2020, China will have been the world's leading tourist destination for several years, and some 100 million Chinese will be travelling abroad each year," said Frangialli, addressing the aviation forum organized in Bangkok by Thai Airways International (THAI) and the Asia News Network (ANN).
The two-day forum, which has gathered aviation and tourism experts from around the world, was held to mark the tenth anniversary of the Star Alliance, the world's leading airlines alliance of which THAI was a founding member in Asia.
Over the past decade, with China and India coming up as major destinations and providers of tourists, the aviation industry has shifted to Asia as the high-growth sector.
"Star Alliances' focus has been on this region from day one, thanks to our founding member Thai Airways International," said Star Alliance chief executive officer Jaan Albreacht.
According to UNWTO, increases in tourism traffic in Asia will take the lead over the next decade.
"The long-term forecast issued by UNWTO in 1995 indicates that annual growth rates in the Asian generating markets through 2020 will be in the order of 6.5 per cent, compared with average world growth of 4.1 per cent, 3.54 per cent in Europe, and 3.1 per cent in the Americas," said Frangialli.
International tourism receipts in 2006 reached 735 billion dollars, which would have reached 900 billion if the figure had included airplane tickets.
While prospects are bright for the industry, the challenges are numerous, including congestion of tourism sites and infrastructure, environmental and health threats.
For instance, Frangialli noted that many tourist destinations were under threat from global warming, that threatens both low-lying coastal zones and mountain resorts.
"The tourism sector has a responsibility to minimize harmful emissions by encouraging sustainable, carboin-neutral transport solutions, to improve the use of natural resources and to contribute to the conservation of natural areas," said the UNWTO chief.

Ok, I have done the Maggies thing, even if my work schedule is cramped and amount of time off is slim.
