Because after you have spent a month dropping in during happy hour and get to know a girl, sometimes the little extra is really not that important. Sure maybe not what you do every night but once in awhile it is a nice change of pace.
I am still friends (only friends) with her after 2 1/2 yrs? Was it money wasted?
I don't think so I had a blast taking her out that night 
Why I like Soi 33?
-Music is not to loud
-Open early
-Happy hour is not that expensive
-No go-go dancing (sometimes this is nice)
-Not that crowded when you go early
Do I stay there all night? Have done but not very often. Most of the time stay for a couple of hours and then move on.
Are the girls really hotter there? I don't really think so but they are dressed up to look hotter

I always liked Degas and thought it was one of the best bars in 33. Lots of dirty girls in there. My mate even got a blow job upstairs on the sofa. I for one will return. Though I must admit I didn't know it had even closed.

I hear what you are saying loud and clear, but the fact that you stayed friends with the girl (in my opinion) has nothing to do with her working on soi 33.
I am regular in some places (not Gogos or your usual lady bars) and also have friends after 2 years in Thailand, it all depends on personnality and chemistry, not venue.

I actually have very fond memories of soi 33,,, my first trip to Thailand,, met a nice Pommie bloke on the plane who new his way round and invited me to join his group, drew a map of the pub/bar. I was to be met at the airport by a gal I had met on the internet. Plane arrives,, no gal ???? never mind I had the name and address of the hotel she had booked for me ( nowhere near the action,, was near airport,,,AHH yes was Louis Tavern). My room was booked so up I go and unpack etc,,, waited maybe 30 minutes and thought fark this I'm going to meet that pommy guy and all the beaut gals he knows. Hotel gets me a taxi and NO ZIP NIL English, I tried Vietnamese but that was worse ( lol ), he tried to follow the map and we went round and round in the most incredible traffic I had ever seen 
Anyway finally I see a whole bunch of women in these beautiful matching pink dresses standing outside a bar,, STOP here,, yes STOOOPPPP... Needless to say it was one of the "painter" bars and I shouted a lot of lady drinks took one of them back to the hotel for 2,500 BHT and she left 10 minutes before my internet friend arrived next morning.
OHH the memories.

This week, at 8:30pm, I paid 80 baht for a beer in Napolean, lady drinks were 110. I think Lookie lookie is about 90 baht for a beer before 9pm. Also, in almost all of the bars, you can "book drinks" before 9pm at happy hour prices, then drink them later than 9pm.
I paid 140 baht for a semi-cold Heineken in Baccara in Soi Cowboy. Similar prices (120-140) in Nana.
As for the barfines, your total money outlay is really what is important. And this money outlay will include barfine and tip for the girl. Discuss the fee with the girl knowing she gets 500-600 of the barfine. You might find that Soi 33 is not really expensive vs. a gogo.
A gogo bar and a Soi 33 bar are two very different environments. Some like one and some like the other. And there are cuties and uglies in both.

Ladydrinks (non alcohol) are even less in Dali at Happy Hour... 80 baht.

I just added that to make the post more interesting. I don't think it has anything to do with her working in soi 33 either.
For any newbie I would also suggest getting the girl alone before chatting to her about the fee. Try to be discreet about it also. Unlike how the newbie (Green Bean) I had with me went about it.
Before I knew it he had asked how much for LT and was quoted 4000 baht. He agreed on the spot and then the girls behind the bar tried to up it to 5000 baht 
I got it back down to 4000 for him. However if he had chatted to her a bit more and not in front of all the girls behind the bar she might have been happy with a lot less

Monet, perhaps? Somehow, when I think pink evening gowns, I always think Monet. When I think yellow, I think Dali. When I think ruthless, drink mongering sluts I think Christies.
These fond memories are etched in my mind and, hopefully, I'll take them to my grave.
I like Soi 33.

I don't tend to negotiate with the girls upfront but, other than the barfine, it ain't that expensive. Buying bottles rather than individual drinks helps reduce costs as well.
