Ordered white iPad mini Verizon version last night online from apple store for in-store pickup. Picked it up today. Getting 20 mb down with LTE.

I really like how it can easily be held in one hand.

With the smaller screen text is crisp even without retina resolution.

Very pleased so far.

Ditto - I decided to get the Verizon iPad mini. It arrived on Friday, and it's the perfect navigation / music / connectivity system in my car. Verizon, because AT&T sucks and provides no LTE connectivity where I live and work.

I experience the same throughput - 25Mbps download and 15mbps upload speeds. It's very nice - and Verizon doesn't block the hotspot functionality, like AT&T does. $30 for 2GB - while pricier tan AT&T or Sprint, I actually get service for that price.

It's a great little device - almost impossibly light and thin, and getting a full 10-11 hrs of battery life.

The reviews complaining about a lack of retina display, and claiming its "the same as the first generation ipad" are neglecting that pixel density is twice that, because screen size s half that. Ergo, it's just fine as a display (though I'm sure the 2nd or 3rd iteration will go retina).

Ditto with "complaints" that it only has an A5X CPU (same as ipad 2), when it doesn't need anything better right now, as the A6X was needed partially to drive a larger resolution display.

iPad mini - the water's fine, jump on in..

$30 for 2GB
I went with a post-paid shared data-only plan: $30 + $10 for 4 GB. Twice the data for $10 more.

No contract, can cancel anytime.

I still use a 3GS as my phone. I picked it up after using the mini for a while, and the 3GS seemed so heavy and thick.

How's that work? Are you already a Verizon customer, or can a non Verizon customer get that as well? Sure sounds like a better deal, but the iPad mini is my only Verizon device so far (and I have no plan to switch my iPhone service, for several reasons) - but as I plan on replacing my AT&T iPad with a new Verizon iPad, a shared data plan would make sense.

The mini was my first Verizon device as well. Before I ordered it from the apple store, I went through the purchase process on the Verizon site without completing the sale to see what options were available. I was surprised when it did not show the $30/2GB $50/5 GB pre-paid plans but instead showed the Data-only shared plans of $30+10 4GB and $40+10 6GB.

After picking up my mini from Apple store, instead of activating the $30/2GB plan from the mini, I went to a local Verizon store instead. They set me up with the shared data plan, and activated my mini for me. I made sure to verify that there was no contract term involved. Seems this data plan is very new since only the manager knew about it.

I didn't ask about adding a second device to the plan, but I assume you would just be charged the $10 device access charge.

Good thing I went for the 4 GB plan as my cable company had a fiber cut incident on Sunday with an 8 hour outage. I used the hotspot feature on the mini and racked up 1 GB of data usage running my laptop off the hotspot to VPN into work.

Thanks for this - going to my Verizon store tomorrow and getting that plan, and if they carry the latest model full-sized iPad in stock, I'll be picking that one up as well - that's how satisfied I am with Verizon broadband service.

Sai Tai - can you send me some more information on how you managed to get that $30+$10 plan? I checked with a couple of Verizon stores, and they aren't able to do anything of the sort, unless it's under a contract.

Hmmmm... Maybe because you signed up for the plan BEFORE you bought the iPad and did so on their site? I thought in order to set up an account on Verizon, you needed to give them a phone number of the device, in order to get started.

How did you start up setting up your account, without any number?

Before ordering my mini from Apple, I did 2 things.

I went through the purchase process on Verizon.com without actually completing the sale just to check price and data options. That is where I first learned about the Shared Data plan for tablets. It was the only option presented for data. The other pre-paid plans were not presented.

I visited my local Verizon store to ask about the Shared Data plan that I had seen on the web site and to confirm that it would be month-to-month and that if I purchased a mini directly from Apple I could bring it into the Verizon store and get it activated on a Shared Data plan. It just so happened that I talked to the manager of the store and she assured me that they could do that for me.

So I ordered the iPad mini from the Apple Store web site for in-store delivery. I picked up the mini at the local Apple Store the next day and immediately drove to my local Verizon store.

The manager of the store who I previously spoke to was quite excited to see a mini since they had not gotten any stock yet. She explained to another employee what I wanted. I confirmed to him that I did not have an existing Verizon account so he proceeded to create an account for me and add the 4GB Shared Data plan. He then entered some account settings into my mini. And verified I had LTE access.

I think your best bet will be to do what I did and go through the purchase process on the Verizon web site until you get to the page where you select the data plan.

Choose the Order Device with wireless service
Then there is a Pricing drop down that is preselected for 2-yr contract. Change that to month-to-month.
Select an iPad mini and answer Yes to Are you purchasing a SIM.

You will be presented a page that confirms this a No Contract with SIM. And it will show the various data amounts and prices...

Account Data Plans
4 GB $30.00/Month
6 GB $40.00/Month
8 GB $50.00/Month
10 GB $60.00/Month

Maybe you print a copy of that page and bring it into the store to show them.

I also saw that Verizon has just added a Galaxy Tab with the same Shared Data plan options.

I called Verizon customer service today as I was unable to access my account info on their website. The agent tried to guide me through the account creation process, but it would only provide me with a temporary password sent via text message. Except that the mini can't accept a text message! So she said I would have to wait for snail mail with the temp password so I could create a My Verizon account

But she confirmed that I had a month-to-month Shared Data plan. She also confirmed that these plans are very new. So I expect a lot of stores haven't yet had to deal with them.

Maybe you can order the full size iPad like you were saying but order it via the Verizon web site and choose the Shared Data plan. Once you have the plan, then you should be able to move your mini onto the same plan.

Figured it all out!

I had to call Verizon Corporate Customer Service (the resellers don't know about this plan, it seems), and the guy on the phone squared me away within 20 minutes.

There's a tiny hiccup, and that's that my iPad mini hasn't yet "grabbed" the LTE network, but I suspect the guy might have typed the provisioning number in wrong (he complained about his computer substituting numbers he types), so I'm calling back right now to re-verify those numbers.

" a temporary password sent via text message. Except that the mini can't accept a text message!"
---
YES, yes it does!

I thought the exact same thing, but just went ahead with the account creation where it said "we will send you a text message" - and right after I pressed that, my iPad received a text message "Message from Verizon: blah blah temporary password blah blah".

So, go ahead, it will work.

My full sized iPad is now on the shared plan, and I'm waiting to fix the provisioning issue for the iPad mini. Confirmed, these are month-to-month plans/ I settled for the $40+$10+10 for the 6GB. I'll see after a month if I should downgrade. It's what I would be paying for two iPads anyways, but getting way more data - and because it's shared, the device that needs more will get to use more (I suspect the dedicated car iPad mini will be using more data).

Thanks again for pointing out your find and your experience - this saved me money and gave me a much better deal!
