In other words... we'll witness the literal end of the 7" Android tablet market after October 23rd.

I'm sure Kindle will continue to do well, though bear in mind, Amazon couldn't care less if you use a Kindle or an iPad, as long as you consume their products.

69% was correct, but that's a 2Q2012 figure.

I'm talking about 3Q and beyond once Google (July) and Amazon (September) launches are included.

Well, where are we at today?

Mind you, that the majority of Android tablet share is built on the back of Amazon Kindles, which technically doesn't matter, seeing as how the Kindle obscures the Android layer, and isn't actually well liked by Google.

The next best manufacturer is Samsung... which is outnumbered by Apple 7-to-1 in shipments, and even far higher in actual sales.

With a smaller iPad coming out, LG and HTC exiting the tablet market, frankly, I don't see where those amazing Android gains are supposed to come from...

Daffy, Q3 just ended, and that 69% number hasn't been revised yet. Sometime next month is my best guess.

That was my point, localguy - Q3 just ended and saw the exiting from the tablet market of LG and HTC (meaning, they sold nothing and lost money), and the evisceration of Samsung during a trial that showed them selling *far* less than they have claimed over the past several years. Even Amazon kindle's sales, which leapt off the charts when it was revealed have seriously plunged over the past quarter.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/557151-kindle-sales-plunge-made-amazon-com-s-gross-margin-look-better.

Finally, not to forget that Amazon makes *no* money from their kindle hardware sales, and that Google is practically giving away the Nexus tablet - in other words, last I checked, making no money can only go on so long... Amazon at least banks on kindle buyers using and buying their products and services. Google? As long as Andy Rubin makes Ballmeresque decisions, will continue to bleed money.

So, with every Android maker bottoming out and selling less than in Q2... where would that leave Apple's marketshare?

My money is on that 70% marketshare having remained stable, or even growing.

Let's now compare other Q3 results from the Android camp, shall we:

- Google's profits are shrinking, driven in no small part by their Motorola purchase continuing to lose money ($500 million this quarter, and Google continuing to give tablet and phone design business to other manufacturers, like Sony and LG - this kinda stupid bleeding of money will eventually have an expiration date).

- Nokia lost another €970 million, as their smartPhone sales sharply decline, and the world isn't beating a path to Windows phones....

- Oh, and Google just introduced yet another Chromebook, with "WTF?" specs. “You know what I’d like? An ARM-based computer that doesn’t run anything other than a web browser and gets only 6.5 hours of battery life.” —Said By No One

Compare that to Apple likely having sold 18 million iPads in the last fiscal quarter, along with probably another 20+ million iPhones (5 million i5s in opening weekend, 3 million for Verizon, 3 million for AT&T, 1-2 million for Sprint, and most likely another 5-8 million iPhones since launch day...)

Still, just comparing 18 million iPads to an estimated 500,000 Android tablets (not Kindles) during the same period (sold, not shipped), I feel Apple's lead remains secure.

Oh, and Microsoft's not doing to well in that space as well - aside from being hopelessly late with their SURFACE tablet, their results for the last fiscal quarter are in:

Microsoft Profits Drop 22% Ahead of Windows 8 Launch

By Darryl K. Taft | Posted 2012-10-18 Email Print

Microsoft announced that its net income declined 22 percent and earnings dipped 8 percent in its first fiscal 2013 quarter as the PC market slowed down in anticipation of Windows 8.

Microsoft reported a 22 percent decline in profit and a dip of 8 percent in revenues for its first fiscal quarter of 2013, as the company prepares for the launch of Windows 8 on Oct. 26.

The software giant said the decline came as customers put off purchases to wait for Windows 8, which is expected to deliver a boost to Microsoft, its partners and developers.

“The PC market was challenged this quarter,” said Peter Klein, Microsoft’s chief financial officer, during an Oct. 18 call with analysts and investors to discuss the earnings for the quarter that ended Sept. 30, 2012. “OEMs drew down their Windows 7 inventories,” he added.

"While enterprise revenue continued to grow and we managed our expenses, the slowdown in PC demand ahead of the Windows 8 launch resulted in a decline in operating income,” Klein said in a statement

Klein also noted that Microsoft has certified about 1,000 unique Windows 8 systems and there will more to come. He also pointed out that over the last year Microsoft kicked off the largest technology refresh in the company’s history as it is delivering new versions of its core operating system, Office suite, server OS, Windows Phone software, Internet Explorer web browser, and core development tools, among other things.

Microsoft announced quarterly revenue of $16.01 billion and net income of $4.47 billion. Those figures compare with the $17.37 billion in revenues and $5.74 billion in net income the company reported for the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Windows & Windows Live Division posted revenue of $3.24 billion, a 33 percent decrease from the prior year period

Finally, how much do you think Apple will be hurt by releasing a 7" iPad?

How much do you think such a product will affect the competition - I'm not talking about Amazon and their Kindle, I'm talking about Samsung (seeing as how, aside from Asus, there's no one else left in the tablet space that matters, or thinks they matter).

I think we can extrapolate from the earnings call just now:

Apple today announced financial results for the third calendar quarter and fourth fiscal quarter of 2012. For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $36.0 billion and net quarterly profit of $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per diluted share, compared to revenue of $28.27 billion and net quarterly profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Apple had provided guidance for this quarter of $34 billion in revenue and earnings of $7.65 per share.

Apple reported total revenue of $156.5 billion and net profit of $41.7 billion for fiscal 2012, both company records. In fiscal 2011, Apple earned $25.9 billion on $108.2 billion in sales.

Gross margin for the quarter was 40.0 percent, compared to 40.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, and international sales accounted for 60 percent of revenue. Apple's quarterly profit and revenue were both company records for the September quarter. Apple also declared another dividend payment of $2.65 per share payable on November 15 to shareholders as of the close of trading on November 12. The company now had $124.25 billion in cash and marketable securities.

Quarterly iPhone unit sales reached 26.9 million, up 58 percent from the year-ago quarter, and the company sold 14.0 million iPads, up 26 percent year-over-year. Apple sold 4.9 million Macintosh computers, a unit increase of 1 percent over the year-ago quarter, as well as 5.3 million iPods, representing a 19 percent unit decline year-over-year.

“We’re very proud to end a fantastic fiscal year with record September quarter results,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re entering this holiday season with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod products ever, and we remain very confident in our new product pipeline.”

Apple's guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 includes expected revenue of $52 billion and earnings per diluted share of $11.75.

The operative section is this:

Quarterly iPhone unit sales reached 26.9 million, up 58 percent from the year-ago quarter, and the company sold 14.0 million iPads, up 26 percent year-over-year. Apple sold 4.9 million Macintosh computers, a unit increase of 1 percent over the year-ago quarter, as well as 5.3 million iPods, representing a 19 percent unit decline year-over-year.

Nearly 60% increase in iPhone sales, 26% increase in iPad sales.

Combine that with the impending release of the iPad and the mid-cycle update of the iPad 4 on Apple's side, and on the Android side we have loss of LG and HTC's tablet business, contracting Kindle sales (they saturated their market) and Samsung continuing to register lackluster sales on their tablets (including their PhoBlets) -I don't see the usage share shrinking for Apple.

Recently released numbers from AT&T indicate that 77% of smartPhones have been iPhones, the remaining 23% being divided amongst all other platforms - this appears to maintain the 69% market share for Apple, if not actually growing it.

I have no doubt that these numbers will platform or shrink at some point, but it doesn't appear to be happening, and certainly not from Android. The only thing so far that has made iPod numbers shrink (20% decrease from a year ago) is Apple's iOS devices cannibalizing that market - thus, the only real competition for Apple, is Apple.

You'll undoubtedly see some of this:

http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/10/28/windows.tablet.market.share.drops/

Claims that "Android tablets gaining market share" with some subsequent goadings from the usual camp of clueless.

The key being "Overall, the tablet sector shipped 25 million units in the third quarter of 2012" - again, notice how these numbers are all based on "shipped" tablets... not actually sold tablets (albeit in Apple's case, "shipped" usually means "sold", as they engage in direct sales to the consumer, and most outlets are constantly sold out of iPads (a trend that will continue).

Remember, tablets sitting on shelves don't matter.

Report from AFP dated 30 October 2012 :-

Google unveils large tablet, revamped Nexus lineup
======================================

NEW YORK: Google on Monday unveiled a large-format tablet computer to compete against the original iPad as part of a revamped line of its Nexus devices, and touted a new music service for Europe.

Google said on its blog that its Nexus 10, a rival to the market-leading iPad, would be "the highest resolution tablet on the planet" and would offer settings for multiple user accounts.

The Nexus 10 appeared to be the firm's entry into the 10-inch (26 centimetre) screen tablet market pioneered by Apple, which last week unveiled a smaller seven-inch iPad mini to be sold alongside its 10-inch original iPad

Google also said it would be selling its Nexus 7, which has a seven-inch screen, with mobile access for GSM networks worldwide.

And Google unveiled its Nexus 4, a smartphone with a 4.7-inch screen manufactured with South Korea's LG.

"A Nexus device is much more than simply a phone or tablet. It's your connection to the best of Google -- all of your stuff and entertainment, everywhere you go with no hassle," Google's Andy Rubin wrote in a blog post.

"Now you have three new Nexus devices, a new improved version of (Android operating system) Jelly Bean and more entertainment than ever before -- all available in Google Play. The playground is open."

Google said the music offerings on Google Play, the firm's online store, would be launched in Europe on November 13, with a new feature to allow music in a customer's online collection to be automatically uploaded to the cloud.

It will be offered in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

"We'll scan your music collection and any song we match against the Google Play catalog will be automatically added to your online library without needing to upload it, saving you time," Google said.

"This will be available in Europe at launch on November 13 and is coming to the US soon after. This will all be for free -- free storage of your music, free matching, free syncing across your devices and free listening."

Google had scheduled a news conference in New York for the announcement but canceled the event due to Hurricane Sandy.

The entry-level Nexus 10 will be sold at $399, or about $100 less than the least expensive iPad, starting November 13 in the US, Britain, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan.

Nexus 7, which was launched earlier this year, is available in the same countries, and the version with mobile data will go on sale November 13 in those countries except for Japan.

Nexus 4 will be offered in the US through T-Mobile and unlocked in Britain, Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada.
