Let's look at another set of interesting numbers:

iPad Sales Grew 44 Percent in Q3

http://www.asymco.com/2012/10/27/ipad-sales-grew-44-percent-in-q3/

Interesting catch by Horace Dediu from last week’s Apple earnings call:

"The iPad grew shipments at 26% y/y but “sales” as measured by sell-through were up 44%."

With competing tablets, “shipment” numbers often make sales look better than they actually are. But here, Apple was in a situation where shipment numbers made iPad demand look weaker than it actually was.

So, iPad sell-throiugh increased, along with shipments. Other competitors have been experiencing contraction and shrinkage of their numbers.

Still think the iPad's 77% share numbers will shrink "as other tablet makers bring more viable products to market".

Really?

Daffy, let's keep it real. That 77% figure is iPhones, not iPads.

This is primarily a tablet thread, and not really a soapbox to preach the Apple gospel and ridicule any other tech company. That said, I thank you for your clarifications about tablets **shipped** versus tablets **sold**. You make some very good points there.

The only reason marketshare (which is calculated based on shipments) is increasing for Android tablets, is because respective manufacturers are *shipping* more tablets, not necessarily selling more (as has been more than obvious by usage numbers).

iPad takes its place with Buddha statute

Published: 9/11/2012 at 05:05 PM Online news: Local News

With the unveiling of a Buddha statue holding a tablet computer in his hand, a temple in Surin province hopes that monks across the country will not miss its message.

Ban Jabok-Ban Nong Lek temple in Chom Phra district of the northeastern province surprised worshippers on Thursday when it unveiled a picture of Phra Sivali holding an iPad at a ceremony to launch the building of the statue.

Traditionally, Phra Sivali, a pose of the Buddha, carries a walking stick, an umbrella and a bowl, and is worshipped for those seeking love, luck and prosperity.

But the one to be built by the temple will have one hand carrying the umbrella -- and the other one clutches one of the innovative best sellers launched by the late Steve Jobs instead of the stick.

Phra Khru Palad Wisut Narisassaro, who chaired the ceremony, said the temple had no intention of upseting or offending Buddhists or Bhuddhism by breaking with tradition.

The iPad-carrying statue will send a message that monks have to stay in touch with the changing world, especially the new trends in technologies. They should try to take advantage of them, he said.

"Monks have to catch up with the changes and use those gadgets like the iPad to lure the new generation to the temple. Monks can use them to teach Dhamma to those who live their life with new communication technologies,'' he added.

The ceremony on Thursday brought together several well-respected monks from many temples in Surin and neighbouring Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani provinces

I wonder if the Dhamma teachings will be part of the software installed on the "one tablet computer per school child" program?

Well, considering the number of monks I saw at Panthip and MBK buying iPads and carrying iPhones, I think the monks heeded the message.

BEST reason to pick up an Android tablet:

In a nutshell, because you can install and run MAME on Android tablets, and subsequently run a far higher selection of classic arcade games using this arcade box.

Apple's iPad grabbed almost 70 per cent of the tablet market during Q2, up from just under 60 per cent in Q1.

Cupertino's unit shipments jumped massively between the two quarters, market watcher IHS iSuppli said yesterday, but rival vendors sold more tablets quarter-on-quarter too. Well, Samsung and Asus did, but both Amazon and Barnes & Noble - retailers selling into the US only, but still making the global top five - saw shipments fall.

The numbers broadly confirm earlier Q2 figures from IDC.

Second-placed Samsung took 9.2 per cent of the market, down from 10.8 per cent the previous quarter despite shifting 2.8 per cent more tablets.

Summary:

Apple - 70% (rising)
Samsung - 9.2% (dropping)
Everyone else - the rest, and falling.

Report from AFP dated 16 November 2012 :-

Larger version of Kindle Fire tablet unleashed
=================================

SAN FRANCISCO: Amazon on Thursday began shipping a large-screen, high-definition version of its popular Kindle Fire tablet computers ahead of schedule in a holiday season challenge to Apple iPads.

Kindle Fire HD tablets ordered online were on their way to buyers and more would be available at US consumer electronics shops beginning Friday, according to Amazon.

"Kindle Fire HD has been Amazon's best-selling product worldwide since launch, and that was before we even started shipping the best tablet we've ever built," said Kindle vice president Dave Limp.

"We think customers are going to love web browsing, email, gaming, watching TV shows, reading magazines, and more on the large, stunning HD screen, with fast Wi-Fi and exceptional audio."

Amazon in September unveiled the new Kindle Fire HD priced at $299 in what analysts saw as a clear challenge to the market-leading iPad.

The new Kindle Fire HD has an 8.9-inch (22.6-centimetre) display and was described by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos as "the best high-end tablet anywhere, at any price" when combined with Amazon content and services.

The tablet is only 0.3 inches thick, and weighs 20 ounces (567 grams). The Kindle Fire HD has dual-band Wi-Fi and two antennas.

A seven-inch Kindle Fire HD priced at $199 became available in September.

In an even more direct challenge to the iPad, a 4G version of the larger Kindle Fire HD will sell at $499 -- the same price as a basic iPad.

Amazon said that 4G Kindle Fire HD tablets will begin shipping next week.

Offering the Kindle Fire outside the US for the first time, all except the new bigger-screen version went on sale in Europe in October.

Apple early this month released a smaller version of its iPad to take on Amazon and Android tablets having success in that segment of the market.
