Remember when Patpong was big in the 90's? And then Nana took over, only to falter and see the (pre-Arab) Cowboy offer up some serious competition at a lower price?

I see parallels in the tablet market, and they are just beginning.

Apple makes some great products, but there's a serious challenge to the iPad from the new Google Nexus 7 tablet. I've only had one for 10 days, but I am impressed by the buttery performance and the slick user interface of the latest Android version (Ice Cream Sandwich). At US$199, it is great value - unbeatable by Apple without some major price concessions. Agree with me or not, but we all win as consumers.

Not only that, I prefer the smaller form factor and ability to hold it in one hand. My iPad 2 was just too big, yet when I'm home I want more than my handy little iPod touch.

I agree with Copy/Paste69, Tim Cook will soon make the mini iPad (7 inch?) a reality, even as Steve Jobs rolls over in his grave.

Why would Steve Jobs roll over in the grave?

Daffy, wasn't Steve Jobs was strongly against a 7 inch tablet? We will never know the full truth, but here's some interesting reading:

I was being facetious

Steve Jobs also verbally dismissed playing video on the iPod, or a large screen, or entering the netbook market, etc...

When he dismissed the 7" tablet market, at the time he did so, *all* Android tablets justifiably sucked greatly, and his criticisms of "phone interfaces blown up to larger screens" were largely valid.

Until recently (Jelly Bean) Android did not have any ability to provide OS support for tablet development (one might argue they still don't).

Whenever Jobs dismisses something, like when he implied "7" tablets are crap", what he really meant is that "everyone else's 7" tablets are crap, until Apple releases one"

;-)

Nevertheless, I am still not sold on a 7" tablet being released in September/October. The iPad nano rumors have been around for 3 years now.

I'm sure at some point Apple will deliver a smaller tablet, and will probably retire the iPod Touch that day - I don't believe it will be this year... or else we would already have seen ports and leaks grace the web.

Good points - I look forward to see where it all goes. Apple certainly makes great products, and Steve Jobs has led the way. IMHO I think the playing field will start to level as some viable competitors begin to erode Apple's share of the tablet market. We shall see. Either way, consumers will benefit.

I totally agree that, in the end, consumers could benefit.

Though, you speak of "viable competitors" - are there any?

;-)

Google Nexus 7 - US$ 199 - best value out there.

Does everything I *want* my iPad to do. Still a little light on the apps, but that will improve given Google's re-affirmed commitment to Android. Admittedly, if there was a 7 inch iPad at $199, I would buy the iPad. But I wouldn't pay $299 for an iPad Mini, and no way $499 for iPad 9.7 inch.

That iPad Mini isn't announced yet, but perhaps on 12 September.

iPads are TOYS, made for consumption only...

Android tablets--and phones--are TOOLS, made for a wide variety of functions. with maximum control/tweakability.

Choose according to your needs.

The usual scripted claims by those who have, or use, neither.

Android tablets aren't content creation tools, because they lack the apps, quite simply. There are a TON of content creation tools on App Store for iPad. Nothing comparable, at all, for Android tabs.

Some people with iPad appear to have no problems creating content:

http://speirs.org/blog/2010/2/4/ipad-fallacy-1-its-not-for-content-creation.html

That said, the iPad is neither being sold, nor advocated as a "CONTENT CREATION" device - it's only the trolls behind the curve that make that their prime argument, because quite frankly, it's all that's really left.

The iPad is a perfectly suited and designed device for carrying your content around, accessing content, accessing data, and sharing data. On the go. Seamlessly. Without any need for "tweaking".

localguy - as for the earlier dismissals of the 7" form factor by Steve Jobs:

http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/08/04/cook.continually.pressed.jobs.on.7.inch.model/

Perhaps more immediately important outside of the case, however, is the fact that a smaller form factor iPad has support within Apple's ranks.

It's obvious that at some point there will be a 7" iPad / iDevice, I'm just not sold that it will happen in September.
