Report from APF dated 19 September 2012 :-

Tablet sales to hit 126 million this year
=============================

Global sales of tablet computers are expected to surge to 126.6 million in 2012, driven by the iPad and rivals with a smaller format, a market research firm said.

The survey by IHS iSuppli predicted a robust 56% annual increase in shipments for the tablet market in 2012, from 82.1 million units in 2011.

"Media tablets increasingly are becoming the biggest growth driver in the market for the small and medium display market," said IHS analyst Vinita Jakhanwal.

"While the 9in segment dominated by the iPad will account for the majority of tablet display shipments this year, the fastest-growing portion of the market will the 7.xin screens used in products like the Galaxy Tab from Samsung Electronics, the Kindle Fire from Amazon, the Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble, and other tablet products using the Google Android operating system."

A report last month from ABI Research boosted that firm's estimate for tablet sales to over 100 million.

IHS said 59% of all tablets will be in the larger form where the iPad "is the uncontested leader."

Growth in this segment is forecast to rise 35% from 55.2 million units in 2011.

In the 7in segment, which Apple is expected to enter later this year, sales are expected to nearly double from 20.8 million units last year.

Among the manufacturers of the LCD displays used in tablets, South Korea's LG and Samsung dominate the market with 42% and 38% shipment market share, respectively, IHS said. Both are Apple suppliers.

Aside from supplying Apple, LG also furnishes display panels to Amazon and Barnes & Noble, while Samsung provides panels to its internal tablet division.

I'm far from an Apple hater, but my $499 iPad is history and I am happily using my $199 Google Nexus 7. It's the best value out there (let's see where Apple prices the iPad Mini) and I dare say Android Jelly Bean is as good if not better than the iOS 5.1.1 on my iPod touch. Although Apple has more apps, Android has more than I need and continues to close the gap.
I'm a dedicated Apple user when it comes to *computers*--just shelled out $3,100 for a new Retina MBP, my old 17" MBP finally had to be retired after 4 years--but I just can't warm up to iOS, which is why I'll never get an iPad or iPhone. You really can't beat Android for customize-a-bility! I love my Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean, and I just this morning ordered (work will reimburse me!) a Nexus 7, anxious to get my hands on the slightly bigger screen...

Amazon and Google are offering great tablets for the money. Apple can still charge a modest premium, but their days of dominating the tablet market are over.
69% and growing. The next ipad will widen that lead. Amazon doesn't compete with ipad, contrary to what the press tries to present and fabricate.

Google loses money on their tablet (and it's arguable the best Android tablet), and by introducing it has effectively killed the Android tablet market for every other manufacturer. I sure hope Andy Rubin keeps hanging around.

69% was correct, but that's a 2Q2012 figure.

I'm talking about 3Q and beyond once Google (July) and Amazon (September) launches are included.

Oh, right, the fabled "any day now" prognosis.

Again, look at the real numbers. Not "shipping" imaginary numbers used to boast, but actual "in use" numbers. The recent lawsuit has illustrated amply that Samsung, while declaring 2+ million shipping handsets only *sold* 226,000 of those. Of 3 million declared shipped tablets, they only sold 37,000.

That's Samsung, who arguably leads the market of Android manufacturers.

All Google has done is contribute to the Android tablet market's further collapse, by releasing a kick-ass 7" tablet for $200, while admitting you can't make a profit doing that. Guess what everyone else in this market is in it for? Yup, profit - and so far EVERY single Android manufacturer is taking a bath in the tablet space. Haven't you noticed?

Oh yeah, Amazon sells a decent tablet, but their main business is the reader, not their tablet (outsold 9-to-1 by the reader), and they are making a very modest profit on either - their business is content, and they aren't even aiming at Apple. Why would they. Watch Bezos interviews - he couldn't care less about Android.

So, where exactly do you see this mythical explosion of Android tablets that Apple should be worried about?

Agreed - it's not about Android. I could care less what OS a tablet has, as long as it works well.

Sure, I am looking forward, not back. So far, Apple has dominated the market, you are correct again. I guess I'm saying that 69% market share will decline towards 50% rather than rise toward 80% - we shall see.

Report from APF dated 25 September 2012 :-

Google launches Nexus 7 tablet in Japan
==============================

TOKYO: Google said Tuesday it was launching its Nexus 7 tablet computer in Japan, aiming to take on Apple's iPad in one of the most lucrative markets in the world.

The Nexus 7's 16 gigabyte model, powered by the latest generation of Android software is available for order at Google Play starting Tuesday and will hit store shelves on October 2.

Priced at 19,800 yen ($255), it comes in around half the price of the lowest spec third generation iPad available in Japan.

Speaking at an event at a Tokyo hotel, executive chairman Eric Schmidt said the rapid-fire growth of its Android operating system would help Google's seven-inch tablet catch on in Japan.

"Android has grown so fast it's hard to keep up," he said. "There are now more than 500 million Android users around the world."

A survey Google conducted showed 75 percent of Japanese smartphone owners use their devices for shopping, he noted.

"That points us to the next enormous growth business in Japan," he said, adding there was "a new wealth that can be created around the Japanese shopping experience".

Google's Android operating system is the mainstay for many of Apple's rivals in the lucrative smartphone industry, growing rapidly around the globe.

In a bold, and expensive, move to tap into that growth, Google itself paid over $12 billion to buy the Motorola Mobility handset business.

But that move raised questions over how Google would balance its own mobile device hardware with supplying the operating system for companies that are now rivals in the intensely competitive race to catch up with Apple's hit iPhone.

Google has launched Nexus 7 in other markets such as Australia, Canada, Britain, and the United States.

HTC's out of the tablet market.... LG has already bailed from the tablet market earlier.

... and thus Android's victory clearly continues.

Dan Rowinski, writing for ReadWriteWeb:

Does Android skew towards a younger demographic? The numbers might surprise you. According to comScore, 52.4% of all Android users are aged 35 years or older. That is five percentage points higher than the iPhone. Near 55% Android tablet users are also older than 35.

So, basically, all the same old guys unable to adapt to a different paradigm - a predictable demographic.

Results from analyst Gene Munster’s semi-annual survey of U.S. teenagers. These two nuggets on the growth rate are stunning:

Survey finds 40% of teens own an iPhone, up from 34% in the spring and 23% a year ago.

Of the survey group, 44% have a tablet; 72% of those own iPads. In the spring survey, 34% owned a tablet; a year ago the total was 29%.

Clearly, Android is winning.

Apple expected to announce iPad mini next week

San Francisco - Apple issued media invitations Tuesday for an event next week where it is widely expected to announce the launch of the iPad mini - a new tablet that will deepen the fight with rivals Google and Microsoft.

The invitation, written in Apple’s usual cryptic style, simply said, "We’ve got a little more to show you." The event will take place on Tuesday in a theatre in San Jose, California.

The press event comes just days before Microsoft is set to release its Surface tablets, which are widely regarded as having the potential to challenge the dominance of the standard iPad.

The Surface will start at 499 dollars, the same price as the base version of the iPad, which features just half the memory and a slightly smaller screen than the Surface.

The iPad mini will compete mainly with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, both of which have 7-inch screens and cost 199 dollars.

At the event Apple is also expected to debut a smaller MacBook Pro with Retina display (a 13-inch model to join the 15-inch model) as well as a line of redesigned iMacs.//DPA

Apple invite hints at iPad mini launch on 23 October

Apple has sent out invites for what is widely speculated to be the launch of the iPad mini - a smaller version of its bestselling tablet computer.

The digital cards' text reads: "We've got a little more to show you."

Rumours suggest the new model will feature a display that is 7-8 inches (18-20cm) in size.

Amazon's Kindle Fire and Asus's Google-branded Nexus 7 have already proved popular with users who want a tablet they can hold with one hand.

But Apple continues to dominate sales, according to research by iHS iSuppli.

A study it published in August suggested that Apple shipped 17 million tablets over the April-to-June quarter capturing close to 70% of the market.
