Having been to Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) 2 times in the last 6 months.... From BKK, I recommend flying in. The border is a horror from Thailand going into Cambodia. SO, fly into Siem Reap. You can travel overland out of Cambodia going back to Thailand, but do yourself a favor..... Fly in. Prior to getting in, call and get trans from the airport, and accomodations. Agree with all been said .Just came back a fortnight ago .Stayed a the Marina guest house, clean and cheap. as for night life , get a M/c for thousand riel and ask for the market, wall in a straight line and all will be revealed cheap to.
as for A/wat got there at six to see the sun rise and half of japan was there before me.
Spent most of the morning on a M/C 10 $ for the day
which was excellent price second day did tour of lake.
well worth a visit.

 Dearest brothers....
I'm in the planning stage of my first trip to Angkor Wat. Will be in the pleasurable company of a stunning, charismatic Buriram Khmer gal [her first visit to Cambo]. Plan is to fly in and spend 3-5 days exploring either her anatomy or the temple complexes 
So, I need suggestions for either nice guesthouses or hotels [preferably with pools], restaurants and activities other than temple complex related.

By airplane: very easy and convenient. Flight cost would be around $100 one way.
By bus: North Bus Terminal. (AirCon bus) from 3:30AM or 4:00 there are many buses (every 20 minutes) that go to the border. It will take you about 6 hours or so. One stop for 30 minutes for rest)
When the bus stops at the bus station (final stop) you need to take a tuktuk or motor bike to get to the border which is about 10 minutes. (5 dollar?)
Once you get to the border, clear Thai custom then proceed to walk ahead to get to Cambodia custom. Just before the Cambodia custome there is visa office where you can get a visa. Request visa request form then they will give you the form (there are many people who sell the form at $10 or so but never buy)
Visa issue takes you about 10 Minutes and then proceed to the custome. when you pass the Cambodia custome then you are now geographically in Cambodia.
Must check your name and date because they make a lot of mistakes.
Now, you need to take a taxi to Siem Reap which costs you about $40. I was alone and found one person who wants to share the taxi fare so I think you can easily find one person. (due to the baggage two person would be the best number for a taxi)
By taxi, it will take you about 2 hours to get to siem reap. There is a famous mart named star mart and next to the star mart there is about 100M alley where many guest houses are on both sides in the alley.
Airconditioned room would be less than $10 per day and it is not that bad but you need to be careful with your valuables.
So, the total damage would be about $35 excluding visa fee.
If you have much time I suggest this route but if you don't and not strong enough take a plane to siem reap.
The time would be around 2 PM if you catch 4AM departure bus.
I was really exhaused from the long journey so I took a rest for the whole day.
Angkor Wat tour: hire a tuktuk (around $10 per day) not a motorbike. spend 3 days to see around angkor wat, Bayon temples, and a lot more other temples.
Angkor wat and Bayon: Hire a certified tour guide for Bayon and angkor wat tour (in the morning Bayon in the aternoon angkor wat) The most historical and important temples in Angkor temples. A certified tour guide is $20 per day.
In the night, go to soksan and martini disco. Siem reap very safe. I walked alone at 3 AM. Pnom Phen danger you should be very careful.
At Matini disco, there are beer promotion girls and waitresses who you can also take out. Few of them are pretty.
There are local RLDs where you can have f*** at $5 but dirty and mostly young vietnam girls.
Khmer girls are kind and innocent but they are not sexually horny. You will know what I mean when you have a sex with them. perfectly opposite of thai girls in bed.
Massage palour girls were $20 dollar no matter you take them LT or ST but heard that the price has gone up to $30 or even more. I think you can negotiate.
My personal impression was that Angkor Wat and temples are very great and break taking monuments.

That tuk-tuk ride from the bus terminal to the border should be no more than 40 or 50 Baht (assume you mean the Aranya Prathet bus terminal?). When you get off the bus at the terminal, you will be surrounded by motocy's and tuk-tuks who will offer to take you to the border at inflated prices. If you walk into the bus terminal complex, and out to the side where there is a 7-11 (in the direction of the Aran Mermaid hotel), which is next to the terminal, you'll see the real motocy and tuk-tuk stand. I've seen posted prices there... regardless, they will take you from there. Be sure to agree on the price before you hop aboard.
